(Originally blogged on the School of Latitudes residency blog)
The School of Latitudes closing reception was Saturday, September 25th. The artists had an opportunity to make public presentations about their work and process, and an evening reception followed later that day.
My final installation for “Uncharted” included black-and-white printouts of the 3 study photographs that I posted in my earlier blog [link to photos] and 6 drawings. The drawings are graphite or ink, on parchment paper.
As I studied the floors in my apartment and wondered about the people and fixtures in the former hospital that would have been responsible for the rusted marks, grooves, and cuts in the surface, my thoughts began to focus on the layers of history and importance of the place that I was standing in. When examined against what I was attempting to study through “Uncharted” such as the authority of map (and mark) making ,and tensions caused by transitions of physical places, the photos became an integral part of my project.
The drawings, which are based on these markings and resemble familiar lines used to indicate terrain and bodies of water, are shown here. I see this project as ongoing and will result in continued investigations.
