Intro to "Uncharted"

As part of the "School of Latitudes" residency at labotanica, the artists-in-residence will blog at least once a week.

My first blog post was an introduction to some thoughts on my proposal, and can be read here on the "School of Latitudes" page:

“The strength of maps is their ability to select from reality and abstract the selection via a well designed symbolization.”
- ICA (International Cartographic Association, Research Agenda)
“Wars of nations are fought to change maps. But wars of poverty are fought to map change. ”
-Muhammad Ali
“It is not down in any map; true places never are.”
-Herman Melville

Through my project “Uncharted” (proposed title), I will conduct experiments in mapmaking using sound, movement, text, and drawing. This week I plan to document several resources concerning maps and power, which is one of the driving research interests behind my proposal.
Although not directly related to mapmaking, an article which caught my eye earlier this week does relate to borders and shows a key intersection between the economic, cultural, and physical.
