The Aiyana Jones story is on my mind.
On Sunday, a 7 year old black girl was shot in the head and killed while she was sleeping by police during a raid in Detroit. The raid was also being filmed as part of a reality TV show.
The story, as usual, is being under-reported and marginalized. I can't help but be pessimistic at this point about the future outcome of the investigation.
The circumstances surrounding this innocent girl's death were apparently camera-worthy, namely police officers excited by A&E cameras, shooting-at-will and using unprovoked extreme force. Because of course, we all need to see more images of black homes being raided. However her story, and her remembrance, are barely afforded any media attention.
This drawing is based on graphic image from a flyer I was given concerning justice for prisoners. I found it to be very relevant, and I wanted to re-draw this and put this image out with a dedication to Aiyana.

Thank you so much for your comment.
ReplyDeleteThe image here is one I found on a flyer that was handed to me concerning justice and rights for prisoners, from a mainstream human rights org. This is definitely a worthy cause. But it did strike me how rallying against police brutality is still taboo and overlooked by the media and many human rights groups.
I thought the image was fitting and decided to draw it, and send it out with a new dedication :)
Although this brother wasn't killed, the 16 year old that was beaten by the 8 HPD scum officers also shows the mentality of a "brotherhood". The condolences given to Aiyana's family were one of stupidity and inhumane emotions. Stoic drawing.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment, and yes, the little that I have seen in the media has been related to apologies to Aiyana's family for the "accident" or "incident." It's shameful.
ReplyDeleteWhat has come from the HPD beating investigation? I know our mayor Anise Parker made some comments when the story broke...
This is so very tragic ...
ReplyDeleteThank you blugumbo for your comment and for stopping by to read. Yes this is a tragedy all around.
ReplyDeleteYes I remember this story.. The parents were on the news.. This is a tragidy that could have been prevented if egos would have been put away. My prayers go out to the family.
